How Workplace Health Can Fix The Broken System

by David Jordan on March 12, 2010

The workplace, may it be the office, factory, construction yard or any other place, is more or less a person’s second home. A third of not just a person’s waking hours, but their lives are spent in the workplace, therefore the health and safety of everyone at work should be an employer’s responsibility. Let’s take an in depth look at some important workplace health issues.

Close to everyone has had the privilege of working at least at one point in their lives. If a workplace was dangerous and posed risk to one’s health, productivity would drastically be low, on the other hand, if the environment was a place that promoted safety and health, the work by employees would be phenomenal. While there are many workplace health concerns to tackle, let’s take a look at six concerns, including diets, drugs, smoking, alcohol, sex and work life balance.

The food we eat, doesn’t really matter if we like it or not, clearly has an effect on the way we live. Thus, teaching and educating company employees the proper diet and nutrition should be common practice for any kind of company. By eating properly and more importantly healthier foods, many workplace health concerns can be prevented in the short term and long term scenario.

Ever since the downturn of the economy, people have been working harder than ever with some even taking two or more jobs just to get by. It is therefore the responsibility of companies to include workplace health practices such as sports activities or free or discounted gym memberships to its employees. A life that is all work and no play is after all a very boring and stressful life.

It is very illogical why people who know that smoking is detrimental to one’s health continue to puff away. Luckily, companies can force their employees to be more concerned about workplace health by making sure no one smokes during working hours and inside company property. By dropping this bad habit, one gets a better chance of living a happier and longer life ahead of him.

There is nothing wrong with companies promoting social gatherings wherein alcohol is served, it only becomes a problem when employees start drinking too much and become intoxicated. Alcohol and drugs should never be welcomed into company premises as these are hazards to workplace health. Drugs more so should never be permitted even in an employee’s personal life, as the effects of drugs are long term and over long duration of time.

While not a very common workplace health related practice in most industry today, promoting good sexual health can have many advantages. Sex is as much a physical recreational activity as the next and is known to be very good for the heart. One should also be educated and be made aware of safe sex practices and diseases one could potentially get from wrong sexual practices.

Around 80 percent of the population confesses to be stressed more at work than at any other place. Working environments should not be dismissed as having nothing to do with worker productivity, but on the contrary it should be invested on heavily by the employer as a good working environment can increase employee interest and decrease stress. Workplace health is among the biggest contributing factor to working environment designs these days.

While there are obviously more complex issues involved, this article basically serves to layout a basic understanding of the health issues discussed. Employers should be accountable for employee health and safety not just for the short term but more so for the long term. In the end, both employees and the company will reap the rewards of good workplace health practices.
