5 Health Hazards of Punk Lifestyle

by Admin on September 7, 2009

Punk lifestyle may be a fad, as a way of life it has its hazards. Here are its excesses:

1. The most outward manifestation of punk is its dance style, which basically consists of spastic and catatonic body movements. These, if not done in rhythm, may cause muscle spasms particularly in the shoulders and the hips leading to pain and inability to move the extremities. It may take about 20-30 minutes before one can regain motion, but the pain may last a while, especially if accompanied by swelling. The patient is thus advised not to move his extremities any further, but to let them rest until swelling or pain subsides. Analgesics (pain-relievers) with a muscle relaxant like glafenine or carisoprodol-containing drugs may have to be taken as well as warm moist compresses applied to parts involved. Once relieved however, the condition will have no permanent damage.

2. Loud and non-rhythmic music is a constant in punk. Although rare, noise-induced hearing loss may be a risk for anybody exposed to any noise higher than 90 decibels. This is the kind of noise one observes in places where there is heavy machinery, gunfire or aircraft. Individuals will vary considerably in susceptibility, but nearly everyone will lose some hearing if exposed to intense noise for a prolonged time. The degree of noise in an average disco-house will vary, and of course we have to consider the average length of time an individual stays in a noise-ridden place.

3. Another aspect of punk which deserves mention is the manner of dressing, particularly the use of body paints. These chemicals are usually organic solvents which, depending on individual susceptibility, may have effects ranging from a mere allergic reaction to fatal life-threatening situations like renal failure. There in no racial predisposition to allergy, but the most vulnerable age-groups are those below 20 and those over 50. Another important point to consider is the fact that allergic reactions do not necessarily have to occur on its first application, but may appear after several uses. It is good to know the component of any topical drug or chemical applied on the body and to consult a physician as to its harmful effect.

4. It has been observed that the young are the primary proponents of punk but that does not necessarily mean they are disturbed people. The punk lifestyle abroad is exemplified by alienated young people who are to some extent sociopaths. In more ways than one, young people would be more susceptible to exposure to undesirable elements, like drugs. Drug addiction may result.

5. Lastly, the most extreme manifestation of punk lifestyle is its tendency to self-destruction and self-mutilation. Punks may resort to cutting some parts of their body to add drama to whatever message they want to express. Definitely this is a form of mental disturbance which calls for concerted efforts to help this individual.

One may still enjoy punk and stay alive. All you need are a little restraint and moderation.
